“I Heard Haitian Men Are Crazy!” And Other Brilliant Reactions To My Intercultural Relationship

We came across this headline [and story] on Clutch Magazine and went to the source XOJane to read it. It’s an interesting piece about an intercultural relationship and the sharing and appreciation of cultures between two people as well as their families.

Though the couple is seen as black in American society, their backgrounds are still culturally different and allow them to learn from each other. The woman is of Liberian descent and the man is Haitian. Their friends and family have laid ‘warnings’ based off of cultural stereotypes that they learned to get past in getting to know each other as people.

She may disapprove of my heritage, but that won’t stop my boyfriend and I from appreciating our cultural differences. There are way too many positive, inspiring experiences that come from intercultural dating for one to focus on the drawbacks.

The author talks about stereotypes she was raised with about her own culture:

Once I jokingly called a Liberian boy I met in college a “Liberian playboy.” That was the first time a boy checked me so quickly. His jovial tone turned cold.

She also touches on challenges of her relationship from her own family members

When my cousin reminded them about my boyfriend, my aunt’s reaction was, “Oh, that Haitian man?” Of course his heritage comes into play when an eligible Liberian bachelor pops up.
