As of Tuesday DirecTV dropped over a dozen Viacom networks including MTV, BET, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central. Disputes over a new fee arrangement is at the heart of it as Viacom feels it should be held to a higher standard and DirecTV should pay more…which in turn means the customers need to pay more. With a blackout in place and representatives from both sides saying this negotiation could take some time people could be missing popular shows like Jersey Shore, 106 & Park, Dora the Explorer, The Daily Show and more. DirecTV is also against the way Viacom networks place so much free content online fueling a whole other debate with cable vs online “TV”. DirecTV also says that overall Viacom networks’ ratings are down…is it because core demographics are looking for their television online now? Is there a correlation between the highest rated shows and who the demographics are?
