“Devious Maids” vs. “The Cosby Show”

This post, which references criticism of “The Cosby Show” as being unrealistic in its portrayal of an upper-middle-class African American family, reminded us of another story we’ve been following – controversy around the new show “Devious Maids‬,” which has been criticized for casting five Latina actresses as the aforementioned maids.

The show’s producer ‪‎Eva Longoria‬ has defended that decision, in part by pointing out that Latina women actually are over-represented in the titular profession. Do the folks who criticized “The Cosby Show” as unrealistic prefer “Devious Maids” and vice versa? Or can you just not win? Is the issue more complex than that? What’s the right way to portray people of color on TV?
