The parents of the murdered grad students are filing wrongful death suits against the University for using misleading information about the surrounding areas to recruit students to the school. The interesting highlights of the LA Weekly post are how the cultural differences accent the case and make it a deeper issue than just losing your kids in a wrong place-wrong time scenario. Because of China’s one child policy these students are the only hope of continuing the family and are often set up to become the bread winners for the family after graduating from a prestigious university. With no child the parents have no one to provide for the family as they get old and can’t support themselves any longer. Also the lawsuits charge that using urban in the language implies safer in Chinese culture so this verbiage puts minds at ease when in reality these kids have to be more aware of potential threats.
