Kelly Marie Tran stars as Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and she is the first woman of color to play a lead role in the billion-dollar Star Wars franchise. Although the fan base for the storied film series is global and spans many generations, that hasn’t shielded her from the type of harassment you find all over the social media sphere. It was reported yesterday that Tran had to avoid further abuse from people online, especially on Instagram, by wiping her social accounts.
Although we have made recent strides in diversity and inclusion in Hollywood, there is still a lack of empathy for people of color in these major lead roles that were once dominated by caucasian actors and actresses. We have seen this type of abuse in comment sections across many platforms, and for all types of celebrities, but it’s still sad to see it go this far and we wish nothing but success for Tran in her continued acting career.
