There is a reason the world places such strong emphasis on reading. Reading lets the human mind explore places, worlds, ideas that wouldn’t be accessible otherwise. It fosters imagination and empathy, and even helps develop deeper analytical thinking and social skills in a world that is constantly diversifying. For this, diversity in literature is vital and We Need Diverse Books is exactly the kind of non-profit organization to promote the agenda.
The Scholastic Reading Club is partnering with We Need Diverse Books to create a special book flyer, for Grades 4-8, with 75+ titles starring diverse protagonists and featuring diverse storylines. The flyer will be distributed to more than 100,000 classrooms and 2.5 million students in time for the holiday season.
According to the press release:
The collection showcases a wide variety of titles highlighting important themes about race and ethnicity, multiculturalism, different religions, LGBTQ stories, individuals with disabilities and more. The range of titles and the diversity of the authors will resonate with the widely diverse population of young readers served by Scholastic Reading Club through schools nationwide and help them understand and appreciate people, cultures and experiences different from their own.
Can’t wait to get our hands on that list. Check out the campaign site here!
