Orange is The New Black (Parody): An Exploration of Cultural Appropriation

With highly insensitive cultural appropriation at an all-time high this Halloween, why not lighten the mood with a fun parody from the YouTube channel BlackandSexyTV on everyone’s favorite Netflix show: Orange is the New Black.

The parody, starring internet darling Issa Rae, pokes fun at everything from black and white cultural stereotypes to the current twerking craze that has swept the nation.

Orange Is The New Black, which features one of the most ethnically diverse casts around, is centered around main character Piper Chapman (white), who is sentenced to 15 months in prison after she is convicted of a decade old crime of transporting money for her drug dealing girlfriend. The parody focuses on Piper’s transformation that occurs after observing the interactions of her black prison mates. She eventually becomes so consumed with “black culture”, that she even uses the “N” word at one point while talking to her love interest, a black male.

Towards the end of the parody, there is a dance off where white prisoners are twerking and breakdancing, while their black counterparts look on in shock. The parody ends with themes like  “white is the new black” flashing across the screen.
