Nike continues to roll out more shoes in celebration of the Chinese year. With Kobe Bryant being a popular star in China it makes sense that two models associated with him will be released in the Kobe 8 System and Huarache 2K4. The classic Air Force 1 gets another Year of the Snake treatment along with a foamposite feature. Nike does a great job of using Kobe’s popularity and fusing it with cultural traditions to make some shoes that should resonate with Chinese fans as well as regular shoeheads. Kobe’s Year of the Dragon shoes last year were only available in China last year, no word if this year’s options will release in the ‘States. Not content with just the Air Force 1 “Year of the Snake” CMFTs, Nike has also unveiled “Year of the Snake” versions of the Kobe 8 System and Air Zoom Huarache 2K4. First up, the Kobe 8 System which is available in two lifestyle versions and one performance version. The first lifestyle model is presented in a stealthy all-black colorway with a snakeskin-textured leather upper, olive branding, and a translucent blue sole. The second lifestyle version features a red suede, one-piece Vac-Tech upper with gold branding and a blue outsole. The performance variant features a red and black Engineered Mesh upper with silver accents and branding, a red sole and a speckled black midsole. Inspired by Chinese kung-fu, the shoe features four symbols on the outsole representing speed, vision, precision and versatility. Finally, there is the Huarache 2K4 which gets an update with red snake print leather at the heel and forefoot, gold stitching at the heel and toe signifying good luck, and a purple-lined Swoosh. – Hypebeast
Nike’s latest Air Force 1 model commemorates the Chinese New Year and the “Year of the Snake.” Expanding upon their successful Foamposite series, the sneaker is once again the culmination of technology, beauty, and substance. What makes this particular model special is in its aesthetic homage to the “Year of the Snake”, depicted in its understated black snake print, a detail intended to echo Kobe Bryant’s Black Mamba motif. The sneaker also features Nike’s signature Air unit, added for cushioning and additional style.
