A biopic on the late, great Marvin Gaye is just what the Doctor ordered. For years, Hollywood powerhouses such as F. Gary Gray, James Gandolfini, and Scott Rudin have tried and failed to bring Gaye’s story to the big screen. The winner of the opportunity to create this story? That would be Dr. Dre. The Gaye estate has even given Dr. Dre green light on clearing Gaye’s music for the film.
This biopic also comes after both the Gaye estate and Berry Gordy signed off on a Jamie Foxx produced television series about the life of the singer. While it’s not clear how, if at all, these two projects will intersect – Marvin Gaye III is signed on as a consultant to Foxx’s series. Now the big question is who will the leading man be? Mahershala Ali has already thrown his hat into the mix as he told the Associated Press, “I would love dearly to do that project and bring some aspect of Marvin Gaye’s life to the screen and to assist and participate in that.” While there’s no anticipated release date, there’s no question that this is a major win for Dr. Dre.
