Last year, Disney announced a new initiative called ‘Dream Big Princess’ aimed at inspiring the next generation of female filmmakers. The studio recently announced that it had chosen 21 girls and women from 13 different countries to develop short films about the women that inspire them. According to a 2017 report, of the top 100 grossing films, women were wholly underrepresented with only 8% of those films having female directors – while accounting for over 50% of moviegoers.
Not only has Disney stepped up to the plate, but they’re also giving to the cause in a monetary way. For each like and share of the 21 videos that will be produced, using the #DreamBigPrincess hashtag, Disney will donate $1 to the United Nations Foundation’s “Girl Up” initiative that positions girls around the world to be leaders in their communities.
